Midsomer Murders – Full Episode List
Midsomer Murders is one of the UK’s longest running crime dramas with a total of 132 episodes over 22 series, the first having been aired in March 1997.
At the time of writing this article (December 2021), the most recent 3 episodes had been completed but not shown. Another long-running crime drama was Taggart but , although there were more seasons (27) there were fewer episodes in total (110).
The actual title of longest running crime drama should however go to The Bill which ran for 26 seasons with a total of 2425 episodes between August 1983 and August 2010, although these were of much shorter duration than those of Midsomer Murders and Taggart.
The characters and several of the episodes were based on the novels of Caroline Graham. Graham wrote a total of 7 novels in the Inspector Barnaby series, the most recent being “Ghost in the Machine in 2004. The first five episodes of Midsomer Murders were adaptations of her novels.
The principle character, Tom Barnaby, was played by John Nettles who originally found fame as sergeant Bergerac in the Jersey-based crime drama, Bergerac. When Nettles left the series in 2011 after 81 episodes he was replaced by Neil Dudgeon who has appeared in 54 episodes to date.
